Safe & Secure

Ryan and I landed on Saturday night around 11pm Alaska Standard Time. (Yes we have our own time zone up here) We were excited to see that the sun had just started to go down. Guy and Gloria Woods (Ryan's friend Trevor's Parents) met us, our nine bags, two cats, and bike at the airport. We have stayed with them through the weekend and they have treated us to fabulous home cooking, great cups of tea, and a personalized Anchorage car tour.

Ryan and I hung out on Sunday, we watched for Beluga Whales at Beluga Point and drank beers on the patio of a local jazz bar. After eating a salmon quesadilla at the Saturday/Sunday farmers market we stopped into a local dive called The Pioneer. We were reading a local newspaper when one of the bearded, gruff looking, regulars, sitting next to us at the bar said, "The Daily Press isn't anything but toilet paper." Ryan and I giggled. The first local joke we heard was "Ever heard of Alaska Wine?" we replied "No" of which the punchline is "Where's my dividend check."

We signed the lease to our new apartment. It is pretty cozy but has a great view of a meadow and the eastern mountains. Our landlord warned us that we should carry a grill lighter with us. In the winter the front door lock freezes due to all the condensation. The long lighter is used to warm up your key to melt the lock.

Ryan started his new job on Monday, he seems to be settling in just fine. The last time we checked on the shipment of our stuff, the truck was in Washington state.

As soon as we find/unpack our camera card reader I'll post some pictures.
