First Fishing Trip August 2009

Elizabeth and Tom invited us up to their cabin to go fishing.
They built their cabin by hand and it was a fun and relaxing fishing weekend.
This is a dry sauna that they built. Inside, there is space for a shower and the sauna benches convert into a platform for a guest bed.

This is their cabin, the large knots on the porch pillars are actually part of the tree. The tree is called burlwood. It's actually a fungus that grows and makes these large knots called burls.

This is the desk across from the house that overlooks the creek below

We took the "Jet Boat"out and went fishing.

Tom forgot the fishing poles... so we waited at the shore

The boat was fast and loud. Tom and Elizabeth took us out into the Alaskan wilderness looking for Silver Salmon. Tom had a loaded bear gun... just in case.

Glacial Silt hitting fresh water. Silver Salmon hang out just underneath the edge of the silt where it is just dark enough to hide.
Kelly caught a super ugly fish that looked like a sucker fish that cleans your fish tank. We took a picture and set it free. Swim on ugly fish.

Ryan with a "Fish On" unfortunately this one was able to maneuver into the current and got away
Once a fish was on, Tom gave Kelly the pole to reel in a very large salmon.

Kelly reeled in this Silver Salmon

Looking for more fish!
After a long day, we dicided to head back to the cabin. This was taken at about 6 p.m.

Ryan wants one...
Tom, Elizabeth, Ryan and Kelly group shot before leaving the cabin
(Tom doesn't really look like that in real life)

We grilled half of the salmon at the cabin and we took the other half home

Kelly used, Basil, Oregano, Garlic, Butter, and Salt for a dry rub.

We ate it with couscous and cabbage, possibly a new tradition
